The State Board of Community Colleges assumed administration of the Department of Community Colleges in 1981. Guilford Technical Institute requested and was granted approval to add a college transfer program in 1983. The name was changed from Guilford Technical Institute to Guilford Technical Community College. The school was then able to offer a two year college transfer program.
GTCC now offers certificates, one-year and two-year career-related programs, a two-year college transfer program, personal enrichment courses, a variety of adult literacy opportunities and training for business and industry. It awards five Associate Degrees in Applied Science, Arts, Science, Fine Arts, and General Education. The main campus is located in Jamestown, North Carolina. Other campus locations include a Greensboro Campus, High Point Campus, an Aviation Center at the Piedmont Triad International Airport, and a Small Business Center.
